My first check from Simon & Schuster!

I accidentally published this on Friday already, so some of you might have already seen this coming, but it's okay.  I am a paid fiction writer!  I got my first check in the mail, and boy, nothing perks you up like getting a check in the mail... for writing.

Need I say more?  Oh, wait, there is one more thing...

WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!

I think the use of five exclamation marks is entirely appropriate today.

(It's Status Check Monday at Killer Chicks!  Let us know what's going on in your world!  And don't forget to check out the flash fiction entries for the 3-3-3 Contest, and maybe enter one of your own!)

  2. First of all, GORGEOUS pic! (of you, not the check)

Secondly, how EXCITING!!!!! That rocks. I think this should be a new trend - everyone should take a picture with their first check for writing!

  3. Aw, thanks girls! I know it's a total cliche to say it, but if I can plucked out of the slush pile, so can you! Just keep querying, never give up.

Jennie, I like your idea! I actually scanned it (yes, I'm a nerd) before cashing it and will frame it. Yes, lame-o.

  9. Congrats! How fun. And yes, five exclamation points was entirely appropriate, if not understated for the occasion.

  10. ¡Felicitaciones! Very cool indeed. So, is this an "advance" -- and are there more on the way? How does this work, exactly? (Signed: a hyper-curious newbie)

  11. Congratulations! That's fantastic news! I saw the post in my reader feed on Friday and hopped over to congratulated you, but you'd already corrected it. Just assume I've been excited for you since then anyway. :)

  13. Thanks so much, guys! :) I didn't mean to be a tease -- I hit "publish" when I meant to hit "save"!

Milo, I get my advance in 3 installments. The first when the contracts are finalized (which happened last week), the second upon delivery & acceptance of the manuscript by the publisher, and the third when the book is published (July).

  21. Thanks for the follow! And congrats on your summer release next year! I have a funny check story. Last week, I got my delivery and acceptance advance. My fourth-grade son saw it sitting on the kitchen counter. He asked what it was, and I told him it was my pay check. "Do you get that every month?"

NOOOOOO, though wouldn't that be nice?

  22. Thanks so much!

    Caroline, I love your son's optimism :)

  23. That's really cool. Frame it! Frame it!

(btw, I saw "creep" scribbled on there, and I thought, "Wow, that's harsh." And then I realized it was the book, not an insult.

    Yeah. I'm quick like that.)
