December has a sense of humor

Mind you, I think life in general has a sense of humor.

First, I was rocked with The Most Horrible Cold last week, which kept me out of commission and unable to do much for about five days, other than tell anyone who'd listen how miserable I felt. Which is probably why, by Friday, I was wondering where everybody went.

Then I woke up Saturday feeling like someone had shoved a nail into my finger and was happily pounding away at it. For a few weeks, I'd been plagued with a tiny little paper cut that wouldn't heal and was clearly getting worse. How could something so small be so painful? I finally dragged myself to the Urgent Care Clinic and the kindly doctor, after marveling over the fact that it was a PAPER CUT, told me cheerfully that my finger was quite infected, and so I have to wear a splint and take antibiotics for ten days.

There's a steel splint on the other side, to keep my knuckle slightly bent as it heals.

And now with the splint I can't type properly. It's taken me forty frustrating minutes to type out this much.

But okay. The positives? (Because there are always positives.) My cold is much better. My finger no longer feels like someone is trying to hammer it until it falls off. And since I can't type very well, I've spent the last couple of days away from the computer, which has been really nice. I've been reading a lot, and I forgot how nice it is to just read. I plan to read all week, because I really haven't read much this year (only 29 books as of today), and I'm pretty bummed about that.

My cold and my infected finger earned me a little downtime. Which, thinking about it now, I really needed. So in the end, a good thing?

How have you guys been?

  2. Yep sometimes a forced rest can work wonders.

  3. Aww, I hope you feel better, but it's always good to look at the bright side, and more time reading is a bright side. :)

  4. I'm so glad you're finally on the mend. With your move so near, it sure wasn't the ideal time to be injured & under the weather. Enjoy what little down time you have reading.

  5. Thats quite a mix of bad that led to some good. I have been listening intently and did not go missing since friday! Infected cuts are no joke, very glad you went to the doctor. You should have found a UV lamp and shined it on the infection, if the bugs glowed it would narrow down what bacteria they were. Super Nerd! Glad you are on the mend and feeling better.

  6. Good typing for having a finger (middle one no less) out of commission - thank god for the backspace button!

Take care of that finger infection...I don't think I could handle it if you were unable to get down to the business of finishing FREAK - I am anxiously awaiting its release...so...chop, chop...get better!

In the meantime...you really do deserve some down time! I wish you and yours a wonderful and relaxing Holiday Season!

    Cheers, Jenny

  7. Aww, crap, Jen! That is awful! But at the same time, if a paper cut is what it took to get you to slow down for a few days and enjoy some other things in life, then heck...find that little paper bastard and frame it! :D

    Feel better!

  8. Bummer about your finger, but at least your cold's better. And yay for having time to read. I hope everything is better for you soon. Take care of those fingers. I want more books from you. ;o)

  9. Eek! At least you have a perfectly legitimate excuse to flick people off now, should you feel so inclined. ;) I hope your finger feels better soon!

  10. I can just see the doctor looking at your finger. "This is a paper cut?" Ouch!

  11. I hope you feel better SOON! But I'm glad you're able to rest for a bit.

I had to "rest" for 3 month in 2009-10. I was sooooo over it by the 1st week. lol!

  12. Dang, what kind of paper are you using? I'm about to take a break away from writing myself, and I can't wait to attack all the books I've got queued up.

  13. Sorry about your finger, but it sounds like some much needed down-time came of it. :) I'm way behind on my reading for this year too. Such a bummer!

  14. Down time is always a good thing. Shame the antibiotics precludes a bottle or two of nicely-chilled Chardonnay. Hope you rest well and get better soon.

  15. That is a paper cut from Hell!! Although now you can flip everyone the bird and blame the bandage. I say milk it for all it's worth.

  16. Only 29 books for the year? Hey, that's nearly my count . . . and I don't have the excuse of a major book release and publicity tour to explain my lack of reading this year!

But, ouch, that really is the paper cut from hell! I've never heard of anything like that before. Get better soon.

Btw, I hope the move is going well. Good luck with everything!

  17. Yeesh. What a week. But I suppose it isn't terrible to have an enforced break every now and then.

  18. Oh no! I hope your finger heals quickly. I was sick last week too (you know, the cold that swept the nation, gross) but I'm feeling better and I'm glad you are too. The one nice thing about being out of commission is taking time to relax and do other things, like catch up on reading.

  19. Boo colds and infections! Glad you are feeling better now :) And yes, just reading is glorious.

  20. Yikes! Hope you're feeling better. Sounds like you and I had a similar week. Had the flu from hell + stye in my eye + a sore in the corner of my mouth that cracks open every time I talk. Fun times. Hugs! Um, wait. Maybe not. I might infect you.

  21. Sorry about both the cold and the hurt finger, but hope both are doing much better! Glad you got some down time, too. :)

  22. A splint for a paper cut? Wow! Stupid infection. The bright side? You got some needed downtime and read. You detached yourself from the computer for a bit, and now you're on the mend. Always look at the bright side, it helps. lol Hope your moving plans are going well!

  23. Thanks, everyone! This week can't be any worse than last week, so I'm feeling pretty positive. :)

  24. A cold is the best way for me to get off my computer and read. Can't argue with a cold...or feel guilty.

  25. Just wishing you some happy reading time, Jennifer. It's no fun to be cut off from the keyboard, but then again, you get a deserved break from writing.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah, just break out that stack of books to read and then...read.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Silver lining, dude. Silver lining. Enjoy all that reading!

  28. Ouch! I know what you mean. I spent the past two weeks of this December without power, so no writing for me either.

But like you said, it was nice to just read every day. Of course, towards the end of my force break my muse was nearly drove me insane.

    Feel better soon! :-)

  29. oh goodness! You sound upbeat though, which is good :o) So far Decmber is good, no snow in London which I'm happy about. Will you be back in Toronto for christmas then?

  30. I'm glad your cold is better! But your finger...that is just horrible. See how dangerous being a writer can be? No one realizes this.

I have been reading like a maniac. I'm trying to stop so I can get more writing done but then I'll pick something up and not be able to put it down. I think I have OCD. I'm pretty sure. Yeah, that must be it.

  31. From a PAPER CUT?! Does that count as a work-related injury?

  32. I'm sorry about your cold AND your finger, but so glad you're on the mend!
